Education & Mentorship

Our Role in Education

Change begins with the children, and they will make the difference for the animals in Mexico

Education is key to changing behaviors about the humane treatment of animals. Animals and kids go together naturally, and how a child treats an animal is learned behavior. Children learn by example. This class is meant to develop role models for the proper care of animals. We are developing an Animal Appreciation class that can be taught to pre-school, primary and secondary children on how to be responsible pet owners. Many times, pet owners do not have the knowledge or resources to solve the common problems which pets encounter, such as over-population, disease, mange, or flea/tick control. As part of our classes, we provide educational materials that can be taken home and discussed with family. Change begins with children, and they will make a difference for the animals of Mexico.

Youth Engagement

SNAP believes children are agents for change. Responsible pet ownership encourages kids to develop skills to become caregivers. This is especially true for vulnerable children in developing communities and communities in crisis as young pet owners benefit greatly from their interactions with animals by developing self-confidence and self-esteem. Pet ownership also encourages kids to develop healthy habits such as compassion and empathy.

Mentorship

The mentoring and leadership components are two-fold. SNAP hopes to find youth that are interested in being role models amongst their peers in school, church youth groups, and community functions. SNAP will find and mentor future leaders to take an active role in creating solutions to animal care, neglect, or abuse. We will provide opportunities for the youth to take part in events in the community including volunteering at SNAP clinics, informational campaigns, and community gatherings. Our approach will be to help build confidence in their abilities to take on other social causes in their community. The second part of the leadership program is focused on mentoring young adults between the age of 18 to 30 years old who can be trusted influencers among our target demographics of pet owners. A member of the leadership team must be committed to working as a team but can complete tasks independently; And be willing to learn organizational and business skills. As part of the leadership program, they must also be willing to mentor youth in how to become leaders and change-makers for their community on social causes.
